Oliero Cave Survey Project
Oliero, it is quite an impressive power cave. Probably the most visited and largest Alpine cave
In 2006 the project was formed to make a Grade 3 map, quite a challenging task to survey
the over 5km of explored passages as most of
them hold an average depth of 50mt and max
depth of about 70 mt .
Specially cause the original line has not length markings what so ever, is damage, broken or missing and will have to be replace or redone. However exciment build up quick as we realized that discovery and exploration of new passages is certainly a possibility.
Thru a survey the “shallow section” of Cogol di
Siori. The teams gather enough information to create a 3D map from main entrance to the bedding plain called "laminatoio".
One objective reach was to find a better route to by
pass the tight laminatoio with long range cave
diving gear, we found one bigger and shorter and
call it the “shortcut” . While in this search process
we visit also a fracture tunnel, also call “laminatoio
verticale”, so there are actually 3 possibilities of
circuit in the Oliero cave shallow section. The
fracture area is not recomended in heavy flow.
Here are some preliminary maps we hope you
enjoy them as much as we did in making them
and expect Oliero cave system to display a grade
3 map in the near future.
Sardegna Krast Project
Bue Marino has potential to be the longest cave system in Europe and the world's furthest single entrance cave penetration underwater. Not really a surprise in one of the largest Karst areas in the world, as a matter of fact to rival both in extension and beauty to the Mexican Yucatan peninsula caves.
Actually there are several cave systems dry and flooded in the area. But only Bue Marino, which is the largest, has been systematically organized for exploration by the local speleological group, lead by Leo Fancello, who has been coordinating the discretionary access permit and the teams exploration efforts. We were happy to be collaborating with them and be let to dive beyond the 300mt area designated for tourist cave divers.
Is noticeable the line work done by a Checz team, lead by D. Hutnam that has been exploring, documenting and creating a beautiful grade 3 map of BM, both above and underwater caves; unfortunately not available for the general public yet.A series of scout trips to familiarize with the remaining known cave systems
The first scout trip was done in December 07 when the local Sardinia Speleological group invite
us to create a relationship assisting with the exploration of the largest cave system in Italy and one of the largest in Europe.
Unfortunately Team was welcomed with snow and rough seas so we look around at the dry caves and sumps, getting really excited with diving in the area!
June BUE MARiNO Scout Dive with a penetration of 2 km
Sept Planned full penetration to 3.75km to Deep section. Team set up 2 x 33amp scooters and 2 safeties at 1.1 km (twice as much as June support team),also placing negative heating tubes and deco bottles, then also doing back to back clean up dives same distance in several days !
We were on the trigger for just
over 4hr and running fast engines, I mean we were doing almost twice the speed of gavins with D20-RB80 multiple stages and scooters.we did the final test for the new SUEX "N" handle.
The caves levels out after first deep Pit for the next 2km and then drops down again to 30mt to go back to 1mt before dropping again beyond 50mt depth.
Unfortunately there are several"air bells"; and so Bue Marino is not a single sump, actually is not longer a candidate for the longest sump in Italy / Europe.
But there are other options ........; )
Still BM is a beautiful cave and a great locations for long range cave diving in relatively warm water.
